[meet jason todd, a guy who uses his fists to solve most problems, including his own brainspiders. he’s decided it doesn’t seem entirely fair that this place healed up all of the injuries he sustained back in gotham before his arrival - jason sorta thinks he deserved that broken arm, thanks. maybe if he’s lucky, he’ll end up with a sparring partner or two and a fresh set of bruises.]

Sounds like it's right up my alley. You up for teaching an old dog some new tricks sometime?

I guess. What are you gonna teach me?

[She drives a hard bargain.]

Depends. Whaddya wanna know?

What do you know?

A lot. I've studied just about every martial art under the sun. I could even teach you how to fight with knives, if there're any around.

I can fight with daggers. Ubbe taught me. Aaron and Eric are gonna teach me guns.

[bamboozlement]

[jason laughs quietly, amused.]

Sounds like you’re already on your way to being a badass. How ‘bout fighting with a sword? Got anyone teaching you that yet?

What kind of sword?

[Yeah, she definitely sounds interested.]

Katana, mostly, but I also know how to fight with a pair of short swords.

[the all-blades are ... a little complicated to explain. who knows if he could even summon them here. still, the fighting style’s teachable with other weapons, or their approximations.]

Katana. Like the Ninja Turtles?

Exactly like that. 'Cept I didn't learn how to fight with one from a giant rat.

So you can teach me?

[bamboozlement]

I wouldn't have offered otherwise. [so that's a yes.] I'm guessing actual katanas probably are in short supply here, so I'll need to find something else that'll work for practicing.

I might know someone who can make 'em. My friend Aaron is a blacksmith.

[bamboozlement]

Really? That’s pretty quaint. I didn’t think anyone still did blacksmithing.

[gristle]

People are from different worlds here.

[Yeah, she's more than a little defensive of her dad.]

I know. Quaint isn’t a bad thing.

[gristle]

Yeah, it is, people always say it when they mean that it's not as good as other things, and that it's cute and old fashioned and less than as good as whatever they have.

[She's had to deal with tourists in Maine before. It's a pain.]

OK, fair enough. That’s not really how I meant it, though. I like old-fashioned stuff. I’d take a walkie-talkie over this thing stuck in my head any day.

Okay. Good.

And yeah, I think most people will. But I'll see if Aaron can make us swords.

You’ll probably wanna ask him to make ‘em with blunt edges for practicing. I don’t know about you, but I get sliced up enough as it is.

Yeah. I don’t want to get yelled at if I get cut up.

Also, the getting cut up part sucks.

Yeah, I guess but it would help with learning not to be stupid.
