The room is dark, grimy and smelly. Even before Rapture's fall, cleaning bills could build absurdly, and Tenenbaum and Suchong weren't the type to care about dirt if it meant more of their budget being spent on research. There is a bed in the center of the room - more of a slab of metal with a thin hospital mattress, really - with wires and electrical outputs scattered around it. No other furniture, but some paper and crayons in a corner that sit unused. Jack sits on the floor, expectantly watching for the door to move. It always moves around this time.

When it does, he jumps to his feet. He's a few feet shorter than his current height, the proper size to look like a child but too grossly muscular. He is barely more than a year old.

Tenenbaum stands in the doorway, holding a cardboard box that shifts and shudders in her hands. Her hair is pulled into a messy bun, her clothing is sloppy and she wears no makeup, but she is a normal woman. Even so, Jack recoils at the sight of her and edges back toward the wall. She doesn't have food, and that means she has experiments.

"Not this time, child." She mutters, in what she seems to think is a comforting tone; it clearly doesn't come easily to her. "Come here, I have a gift for you."

...Gift? Jack isn't familiar with the word, but he knows he doesn't trust her. Still, he doesn't want to get hurt, so he inches closer. Tenenbaum sets the box on the floor, and he hears a squeak from it. A moment later and it pops open, revealing a scrawny beagle puppy. She yawns silently, and squeaks for attention.

"This is a puppy. It's for you."

He's never seen a puppy before, and his eyes grow wide with wonder. It takes a bit of coaxing to bring him closer before he picks the dog up, and she happily licks his face before settling in his arms. She's shaking from the cold, but his sweater is toasty warm and she seems to instinctively know she's safe.

"She's mine?"

"Yes. You can name her, if you like. Any name you want."

"Mm... her name is Anna."

Tenenbaum offers him a tight smile, "You will get extra food now, so you make sure that you share."

"Yes, Mama."

"And you keep her warm, or she will freeze."

"Yes, Mama."

"And you keep her in the box when Suchong comes, he does not like dogs."

"Yes, Mama."

"Good boy." She nods curtly. "No tests today. You play with your puppy."

And with that, she leaves. The door slams behind her, and locks with a thud. And Jack grins down at Anna, who is already fast asleep. He has a friend, finally. He feels like he could burst.
