[ You'd asked Ubbe for a favor. While you were a passable warrior you were not a warrior king. You were not trained by Aethelwulf the way he had trained his real son Aethelred. You had been groomed by King Ecbert to be a different sort of king. You were going to unite England into one kingdom. But what faced you now was a Viking horde and what your people needed was a man who could be both and you could not hide from battle.

So, who better to train you than a son of Ragnar Lothbrok? You admire Bjorn -- even cut your hair because of it-- but you don't trust him. Ubbe's different. Ubbe is the one that reminds you of Ragnar so you trust him. You see Ragnar in his eyes and in his actions.

But how Vikings train is nothing like what you've known. It's nothing like what Aethelwulf did teach or even close to what he had done with Aethelred.

You're in the forest.

"First lesson, is not to be afraid. So go and stand by the tree."

It's an odd instruction, Ubbe's paying more attention to the axe than he is to you.

You look at the tree and you can't exactly help yourself. You've always been one to ask questions even when you shouldn't and well it's no problem to ask questions now.

"Why? What are you going to do?"

"You asked me to teach you how to fight and I can teach you the ways in which to fight with a sword, an axe or a shield to stay alive, but if you are afraid then you're already dead." He hits you with the blunt end of the axe and it's a gesture that had your guards been closer they would have been on Ubbe. If you had been a different sort of king it would have angered you. "So, go stand by the tree."

You exhale and you're uncertain about this even though you asked for it. When you finally get to the tree and turn to face Ubbe he throws the axe seemingly straight at your face. You manage to duck and it hits the tree with a thud. Your heart is racing and your hand goes out in a placating manner. "Ubbe!"

"Do not be afraid."

Ubbe grabs another axe and he does the same thing again and you're quicker to dodge this time. Your hearts still racing but Ubbe makes an approving noise and you suppose this is what you're in for. ]
