The image blurred.
Flowers dotted a wide expanse of grass, reaching out and into the distance. There was laughter and singing. A sweet voice echoed through the spring air and a sense of calm settled over those listening to her song.
'I have a dream, a song to sing
To help me cope with anything'
The space flickered and in an instant, everything changed. It was as if her eyes close and reopen into the real world. The sweet relaxing song was gone and in its place was the thundering drum of two heartbeats. The ground was solid beneath her feet, hardened rivers of concrete curving in grid locked paths. The sky was dark but tinged with a sick orange glow that complimented the yellow lights decorating the street.
Heavy breaths fell from her lips as she darted through the streets. She was running but as fast as she ran, it wasn't enough. A man shouted. The muscles in her legs burned. The sweet song returned as if it was forcing its way through the panic, rage and anger that swirled in her chest.
'If you see the wonder of a fairy tale
You can take the future even if you fail'
Her legs buckled and the song slipped from her thoughts. The panic grew into anger and her hand rose as a bright golden curl of fire blossomed in her palm. 'No.' The voice was sweet, calm and feminine; matching the song but without the relaxing compulsion to it. 'I will not hurt them.' Her fingers curled and the surge of power faded. She closed her eyes and tried to ignore the sounds behind her. There were shouts but they were too far away to matter. All that mattered was that song, the field and that second heart beat.
Her thoughts echoed gently as her eyes opened. The city street came into perfect view. She was bent over with the tips of her fingers sinking into her chest, just above her heart. Wheat colored hair curled in lazy waves over her shoulders as stormy gray blue eyes stared up at the sky. Her lips formed a sound but it was as if the memory had a delay.
'I believe in angels
Something good in everything I see'
The men were catching up to her and there was very little she could do. She pushed herself to her feet and the memory blurred as she staggered. One step and then another, the concrete fled beneath her feet, she took a sharp turn and then crashed into a wall. Nails scrapped against the brick but there were no holds to climb and not time to turn around.
Scarlet smeared against the wall and at the tips of her fingers as she pushed herself up. There was something beneath her feet. Metal scrapped against metal and a crash sent her to the ground.
'I believe in angels
When I know the time is right for me'
She focused on the song, letting its calm enticement flood through her. The men were at the opening to the alley and they were speaking. It was difficult to hear what they said but snippets of the conversation stood out like they were being shouted in her ear.
"This is her?"
Her back pressed against the wall as she turned to face them. There was no recognition in her features but they somehow knew her. One of the men was holding a white feather in his hand. It glowed with a golden shimmering light and she recognized it. 'Maria'
"Let's see your wings."
She wanted to tell them to stay away but her voice was lost. The song she'd been singing had all been in her head with the field and the flowers. It hadn't been real. It hadn't belonged to her and now she was trapped. Her lips moved but once again, there wasn't a sound.
Then the men were close enough to reach her. One grabbed her neck while the other pulled something over her head. She struggled but she didn't really want to hurt them.
The back of her head exploded in pain. A bright light blossomed behind her eyes and just before she lost consciousness the last verse of the song, sweet and comforting, echoed through her thoughts.
'I'll cross the stream, I have a dream'
