Everything hurts, there's a desperation in the fight. Everything hinges on this. You need their armies, you need peace. You need to fulfill your duty to King Alfred and obtain your father's dream of the land that he had been promised by King Ecbert.

On your back, feeling strength fade, you know that the Christian God is not going to help you triumph. It's not the god that you reach out to and have faith in when it really matters. So you pray to Odin. ]

[ You find the strength to reach for your knife and to end this. You finish the Black Dane but your fading as your wife comes to you but you still breathe. ]

[Carol watches in awe, feeling as thought it's she who's fighting the Black Dane King. The brutality alongside the rules, the audience circling the fighters, the cheers and jeers, everything is so primal. It makes her want to fight.]

So...You obviously won the fight. Did you survive?

[ There's a smile in Ubbe's voice when he answers. He doesn't really relish in violence the way that most Vikings do but this had been for a purpose and it had averted many deaths. ]

Yes. It was a long recovery.

That's good. I'm glad it wasn't in vain. Why were you fighting him?

It was to stop a war and to create a settlement on the land my father was promised.

I see. And he was trying to go back on that promise made to your father?

[ubbe]

No, the Saxon king wasn't in a position politically to grant them yet. His grandfather hadn't actually had the right to give them to my father so it was a precarious situation.

[Ivar watches and is extremely impressed. He always knew his brother was a dangerous man when push came to shove, but so often he was passive. To see him literally beat another Viking to death with his hands had put him in a new light in his brother's eyes. He deliberately uses video so that Ubbe can see he's smiling a little despite his usual abrasive words.]

Well, that explains why you looked like shit when we got back.

[ Ubbe's clearly amused by Ivar's choice of words. ]

Did you not believe me when I told you the story?

[ragnarsson]

It's one thing to hear about you getting into a fight, dear brother, and another to witness you killing a man with little more then your hands. You don't often show that side.

[The last time he remembers Ubbe being that vicious was the particularly creepy smirk he seemed to wear the entire time they blood-eagled Aelle.]

I had something worth dying for.

Father would've been proud.

[He says it a little sadly, but with no small amount of affection nonetheless. Ivar knows Ragnar had seen different things in his sons. Ivar would be the one to continue on pillaging and raiding like he did, while Ubbe got the compassion that would allow him to acquire lands.]

I know.

[ Even if Lagertha hadn't been there, Ubbe had felt it when he put his hand in the fertile soil. ]

[gristle]

That’s good at least. Because you’re related to Odin?

[ubbe]

I don't know if that is why.

Well that’s one good thing. Normally you’d need to pray to my brother for that.
