Eric's Memory Share

[ The office area they have you laying in is dark, musty, and unkempt, as most things tend to be anymore. You're grateful for them, truly- especially Maggie, who set your ankle as best as she could with what was available. It hurts, but it's not intolerable yet. Mostly, you feel a little silly about it. You can vaguely hear talking outside, though you can't make out what's being said, that's when you hear his voice, frantic and worried, because of course he is. ]

Eric? Eric?!

In here! [ You hear his hurried footsteps until he's standing in the doorway, wearing that sad puppy dog expression that's so endearing to you, but you raise your hands a fraction to halt his reeling thoughts. You know how worked up he can get, especially since it looks worse than it is with you propped up with musty pillows, and your elevated foot wrapped in a spare scarf and some small bits of wood. ]

I'm okay. It's like a volleyball injury, it's a broken ankle- at least that's what Maggie said. I like her.

[ Your hope is that if you start talking, it will ease some of his worries, but it does little to quell it. At least he's not in a panic, though the look he casts at your ankle may say otherwise. Your next words are cautious and succinct. ]

It's not a big deal.

[ Still, you don't move from your position as he moves forward, crouching at your feet. His hands hover so delicately over the injury, those worried blue eyes travel slowly up to your face as you hurriedly explain. ]

I'll just go to the infirmary when we get back.

[ That's what it takes to get him in your space, and his hands cup the sides of your neck as his lips meet yours almost frantically. Your own hands move to mirror his, carding through the short hair at the back of his head as you kiss him back. It's always the same feeling you get, and it doesn't matter that you've been together almost ten years, your heartbeat quickens, and those butterflies never seem to really go away when you're near him. This man is your entire world.

You huff in amusement as he pulls away, and you look at Aaron as if he hung all the stars in the sky just for you. His hand goes to your chest, and you grasp his wrist gently. Reassuring him that you're okay. His other hand strokes your cheekbone as he talks- reassuring himself that you're there in one piece. ]

When I saw that flare go up, I-- I thought..

You were worried, were you? [ You smile at him, knowing the answer. ]

Yeah. [ Nodding as he whispers his answer. He pulls away and casts another look at your ankle before sitting and making himself comfortable by your leg. Before he can say anything else, you quip lightly. ]

This is your fault, you know. [ At first, Aaron looks worried, then incredulous, before that worried face cracks a smile. Good. ]

Is that so.

Because I love you. Because when I'm worried, I do stupid things.. and when I do stupid things, I wind up underneath a rust bucket surrounded by roamers who roll a rear passenger tire onto my left ankle.

[ He pauses and then chuckles, which gets you to laugh with him. Then you remember what you were doing before all that happened. ]

Hey! Something good came out of today. [ You reach over to your backpack next to you, shifting it to your other side in front of Aaron, though he helps you guide it. He's so helpful and thoughtful.. Again, you're glad he's yours. ]

While I was waiting for you, I searched through the neighborhood and I found that.

[ You cross your arms, pleased with yourself as you let Aaron lift open the backpack and search inside. He's quiet, pulling out the license plate and staring at it for a long moment before closing his eyes. There's another bout of silence as he opens his mouth to speak but doesn't. That's when it clicks. ]

You lost the license plates.

[ More silence, then he looks at you. There's an edge of irony in his expression. ] I lost the car.

[ You can't help it, you laugh. ] Maybe it's for the best? That.. monstrosity out front can run. It's so ugly, maybe it will scare the roamers away.

[ He laughs with you, and you put your hand on his leg, and amidst all of this? You know in your heart everything is going to be okay. ]
