Memory Share: Rhys (Little Kid Fluff)

Today's your first day of kindergarten. You're pretty nervous, but your mom looks a little sad (even if she's smiling at you), so you put on a brave face and at least pretend to be super excited. She packed your Typhon Deleon lunchbox with your favorite: a peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwich, chocolate milk, and an apple. You kind of feel like Typhon as you climb aboard the bus, headed off to an unknown place, ready to discover its secrets.

The bus is pretty full, but there's an empty seat next to a brown-haired boy with glasses. He's chewing on his bottom lip and keeping his eyes on his feet, but you smile as you sit next to him anyways. He glances at you, but doesn't say anything, so you clutch your lunchbox a little tighter and stay quiet. The bus ride is pretty bumpy, though, and at one point, you and the other boy get bounced up and into each other. You both mumble out a "sorry", then giggle a little.

"My name's Rhys," you say, sticking your hand out for a handshake.

"Uh...I'm Vaughn," the boy answers. Very timidly, he shakes your hand. "Is that Typhon Deleon on your lunchbox?" His voice is so quiet you almost miss his question.

You nod proudly and hold it up to show it off. "Sure is! I'm gonna be a Vault Hunter when I grow up, just like him!" Vaughn stares at you, eyes going wide.

"Isn't that scary, though?" he asks. Immediately, his teeth start worrying at his bottom lip again.

"Nah, I'm really brave." You just met, he won't know you still sleep with your Aquator-themed hologram playing at night. "Plus, I'll have really cool weapons to fight off any monsters. And after I open my very own vault, I'll find a big treasure!"

Vaughn blinks, then pushes his glasses up his nose. "Woooow. I never thought about it like that. I guess a big treasure is worth having to fight scary monsters." He's quiet for a moment, and then, "You think a Vault Hunter could have a friend? Maybe?"

You pretend to think it over, but you already know the answer. "Yeah, I guess. I bet if he didn't, he'd get lonely. Plus, Vault Hunters have to fly to other planets. They gotta have a crew."

"Well, I gotta get through kindergarten before I think about joining a spaceship crew," Vaughn says.

"Hey, I'm starting kindergarten today, too! Just stick with me, we can face it together!" you reply.

Just then, the bus pulls to a stop in front of the school. You and Vaughn stand up and file off with the other students. As you're looking for where to go, his hand slips into yours and grips tightly. You squeeze it reassuringly, then lead him over to where a nice-looking lady is standing with a small group of kids. The kids look to be around your age, and the sign the lady is holding has a big K on it. Vaughn sticks close to your side, but he does let go of your hand.

[Enis isn't really far away but speaking like this is faster.]

That's cute.

Did you guys stay friends?

Sounds like a good friend. I had a friend like that in elementary school, before dad had me home schooled. [It's her nice way of saying that he had her declared legally dead.] I don't remember her though.

I think those memories were erased.

You mentioned these vaults before. What's in them that's so valuable?

I assume that it happens?

[She never went to college.]

Sounds cool. What do you know about the Eridians?

[This is the kind of nerdy stuff that Enis really likes.]

Really?

[Enis considers her past but it only gives her a headache. It's easier for her to look towards the future or learning something new.]

That sounds interesting. I wish I could learn more about them. Not that I need more species information logged in my head but I like knowing about the past. It was never useful information but I like it.
